Moncton Overdose Surge: Province Activates Emergency Measures
25 Jun
Summary
- New Brunswick Emergency Measures Organization activated Level 1 for Moncton.
- Harvest House Atlantic reported 720 overdose responses in late June.
- Medetomidine, a veterinary tranquilizer, is mixed with fentanyl in overdoses.

The New Brunswick Emergency Measures Organization (EMO) has activated Level 1 to address a significant surge in overdoses in Moncton. This activation involves daily meetings with involved agencies to enhance co-ordination and support front-line workers experiencing burnout. The province has deployed additional resources, including security and mobile crisis services.
Between June 1 and June 22, Harvest House Atlantic documented 720 overdose responses, averaging 34 per day. The Moncton Fire Department recorded 300 overdoses in the same period. These figures represent individual agency responses and not the total number of incidents.
The surge is attributed to medetomidine, a veterinary tranquilizer, being mixed with fentanyl. Health Canada confirmed this link. While naloxone is effective against fentanyl, it does not reverse medetomidine's sedative effects. Current treatment focuses on monitoring vitals and providing oxygen.
Nearby communities, including Saint John, are monitoring for medetomidine. Organizations are preparing for a potential increase in overdoses, particularly when social assistance cheques are issued at the end of the month. EMO is ensuring resources are available for future surges.
