Summary
- Mother donated her daughter's cord blood in 2017.
- Daughter received a life-saving cord blood transplant in 2022.
- NHS has issued its 1,000th umbilical cord blood unit.

A mother's foresight in donating her daughter's umbilical cord blood in 2017 led to a life-saving miracle years later. Natasha Kirkpatrick donated Ellaria's cord blood after her birth at Luton and Dunstable University Hospital. By 2022, Ellaria, then eight, desperately needed a similar donation for a relapse of acute lymphoblastic leukemia. A planned stem cell transplant was cancelled, but an emergency cord blood transplant at Bristol Royal Hospital for Children ultimately saved her life.
The NHS Blood and Transplant cord blood bank has now issued its 1,000th unit for stem cell transplants. This vital resource, collected from the placenta and umbilical cord, is crucial for treating various cancers and immune disorders. The bank, established in 1996, holds nearly 20,000 donations, with recent transplants sent to locations including London, Bristol, Manchester, Birmingham, Glasgow, Canada, and the Netherlands.
Mrs. Kirkpatrick expressed profound gratitude to the anonymous donor, stating her daughter "would not be here" without the transplant. Ellaria, now a vibrant eight-year-old, continues to be monitored for after-effects but is described as a typical child enjoying school and her hobbies. This powerful story underscores the enduring impact of cord blood donation, which can save lives decades after the initial contribution.
