One Drink Daily Ups Health Risks, Study Finds
9 Jun
Summary
- Even one drink daily increases health risks and disease chances.
- No amount of alcohol prevents premature death, research shows.
- Study intended to inform dietary guidelines but findings were sidelined.
A comprehensive study released on June 8, 2026, indicates that even moderate alcohol consumption poses significant health risks. Researchers concluded that daily drinking, even as little as one drink, increases the likelihood of over 200 diseases, including cancer and heart disease, and raises the risk of early death. The study found no protective effect of alcohol consumption at any level.
This research, commissioned by the Biden administration, was intended to guide the new Dietary Guidelines for Americans, 2025-2030. However, allegations suggest the findings were "sidelined" by the Trump administration, with a former official claiming he was asked to "kill the study." The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) denied these allegations, stating the study was reviewed alongside other scientific evidence.
Further controversy arose as the alcohol industry reportedly launched campaigns to discredit the study, and a House oversight committee questioned its methodology. Despite these challenges, the study's authors maintain their findings are based on robust scientific evidence. The study's results contrast with some other government-commissioned research that suggested moderate alcohol use might be linked to a decreased risk of all-cause premature death, though still an increased risk for certain diseases.
