Mizoram Battles Highest Cancer Rates with New Health Initiatives
1 Mar
Summary
- Mizoram leads India in cancer incidence and mortality rates.
- Stomach and lung cancers are most prevalent due to lifestyle.
- State implements healthcare projects with ADB and World Bank.

Mizoram faces the highest cancer incidence and mortality rates across India. Aizawl district alone reports a concerning age-adjusted rate of 269.4 per lakh men. Health officials identify stomach and lung cancers as the leading causes, strongly linked to prevalent tobacco and betel nut usage, diet, and genetic predispositions.
To combat this health crisis, Mizoram is actively enhancing its healthcare infrastructure. The state has secured a loan agreement with the Asian Development Bank for a project to strengthen public healthcare systems, aiming for universal healthcare. Concurrently, a World Bank-funded health systems strengthening project is nearing its completion by March 2026.
These initiatives include the establishment of a Super Speciality Cancer and Research Centre in Aizawl. The state is also focusing on preventive measures like the Human Papillomavirus (HPV) vaccination campaign for 14-year-old girls to prevent cervical cancer, a significant concern, especially given low screening rates among women.
Officials express serious concern over the high cancer burden, noting that even international cancer experts have remarked on the unusually high number of cases among the Mizo population. The government emphasizes the importance of lifestyle changes, alongside robust healthcare improvements, to mitigate the escalating cancer rates.
