25 Feb
Summary
- Mizoram's first laparoscopic pancreatic cancer surgery was successful.
- The complex procedure occurred during a gastroenterology workshop.
- ZMC Hospital aims to reduce patient travel for advanced treatments.
In a significant advancement for Mizoram's healthcare sector, the Zoram Medical College & Hospital (ZMC&H) near Aizawl has performed the state's inaugural laparoscopic surgery for pancreatic cancer. This complex procedure, marking a major step for specialized surgical care, was successfully carried out on Tuesday during a gastroenterology academic session.
The workshop, jointly organized by ZMC&H's surgery department and the Association of Surgeons of Mizoram, focused on advanced minimally invasive techniques. The laparoscopic approach, also known as keyhole surgery, involves smaller incisions, leading to less blood loss and quicker recovery times compared to traditional open surgery.
Specialist surgeons from outside Mizoram collaborated closely with the local surgical team, facilitating invaluable knowledge transfer and hands-on training. This collaboration is expected to bolster the state's capacity in performing such intricate procedures.
Furthermore, Endoscopic Ultrasound (EUS) procedures were offered free of charge to eight patients, in partnership with a local medical gastroenterologist. This initiative provides critical access to specialized diagnostic and interventional care that is often scarce outside major urban centers.
Hospital sources hailed the event as a breakthrough, emphasizing that performing such a demanding surgery locally will alleviate the necessity for patients to seek treatment elsewhere for complex pancreatic issues. This achievement is poised to pave the way for more advanced minimally invasive procedures at ZMC&H, further strengthening Mizoram's medical infrastructure.
