In a remarkable medical achievement, an 80-year-old woman in Kolkata has successfully undergone the MitraClip procedure, a minimally invasive treatment for severe mitral regurgitation. Performed by Interventional Cardiologists Dr. Prakash Kumar Hazra and Dr. Soumya Kanti Dutta at Manipal Hospital Dhakuria, the procedure lasted only 30 minutes. This marks a significant milestone as she is the first female patient at the hospital to receive this advanced treatment.
The patient had previously suffered from recurrent hospitalizations due to worsening heart failure, lung infections, and edema. Traditional open-heart surgery posed a high risk given her multiple comorbidities. The MitraClip procedure, a transcatheter edge-to-edge repair, offers a less invasive solution by guiding a device to repair the mitral valve leaflets through a catheter.
This innovative approach avoids open-heart surgery, blood transfusions, and lifelong anticoagulation therapy, significantly reducing bleeding risks and recovery time. Dr. Soumya Kanti Dutta highlighted its benefit for patients with complex health conditions, while Dr. Prakash Kumar Hazra emphasized its repair-oriented nature, enhancing longevity and minimizing complications. The patient is now recovering well at home, showcasing the procedure's effectiveness in improving heart failure symptoms and reducing hospitalizations.
