New Heart Surgery: Safer, Faster Recovery!
1 Aug
Summary
- Minimally invasive bypass surgery found as safe as traditional methods.
- Patients with less invasive procedure recovered faster.
- Reduced need for blood transfusions in the new method.
A groundbreaking Canadian-led study published in The Lancet demonstrates that a minimally invasive approach to bypass surgery is equally as safe as the traditional method. This new technique, which requires a smaller incision, also shows improved patient recovery. Participants in the trial who underwent the less invasive procedure experienced faster healing. Furthermore, the study observed that patients receiving the minimally invasive surgery needed fewer blood transfusions. They also spent less time requiring mechanical ventilation compared to those who had the standard open-chest surgery. While pain and hospital stays were similar across both groups, the findings mark a significant advancement. The research involved 170 patients across six countries between 2018 and 2024, led by the University of Ottawa Heart Institute.
