Migraine Phases: Know When Relief Will Come
17 Oct
Summary
- Migraines progress through four distinct phases before ending.
- Early treatment can potentially shorten the migraine's duration.
- A migraine lasting over three days requires medical attention.

Migraines are understood to progress through four distinct phases, offering insights into when sufferers might anticipate relief. These stages include prodrome, characterized by early neurological symptoms; aura, which involves temporary sensory or visual disturbances experienced by a minority; the headache phase, often accompanied by nausea and sensitivity; and postdrome, commonly known as the 'migraine hangover.'
Neurologists explain that prodrome can begin up to two days prior, aura symptoms typically last between 5 and 60 minutes, and the main headache phase endures for 4 to 72 hours. The postdrome phase, or recovery period, can persist for up to two days, meaning a full migraine experience could potentially span a week in severe cases.
Experts advise treating a migraine early, upon the first onset of symptoms, as this strategy may help prevent the attack from escalating. While not a guarantee of immediate shortening, early treatment can make the migraine more manageable. It is crucial to seek medical attention if a migraine extends beyond three days, a condition known as status migrainosus.
Urgent medical assessment is also necessary for sudden, severe headaches, particularly those accompanied by weakness, speech difficulties, confusion, fever, or unusual visual disturbances. These symptoms require immediate evaluation regardless of their duration.
