Midwives Struck Off After Baby Death
14 Oct
Summary
- Woman arrived bleeding heavily, left waiting 37 minutes for assessment.
- Midwives failed to respond to family calls for help.
- Baby died from brain injury; inquest found neglect contributed.
Two midwives have been removed from the register following the death of a baby at King's Mill Hospital. The mother, 41 weeks pregnant, arrived with vaginal bleeding on September 13, 2023. Despite being directed to return, she faced a critical delay of 37 minutes before being assessed.
During this time, the midwives, Glenys Wood and Kathryn Duignan, failed to adequately respond to the patient and her family's calls for help. The baby tragically died from a brain injury caused by placental abruption. An inquest in July 2024 determined that neglect contributed to the infant's death, stating the baby would likely have survived if a Caesarean had been performed earlier.
The Nursing and Midwifery Council panel found the midwives' actions breached professional standards. Given the seriousness of the omissions and the lack of engagement from the staff, a high risk of repetition was identified. Consequently, both midwives have been struck off and can no longer practice.
