Midwifery Services Arrive in Manitoba's Interlake Region

On November 16th, 2025, the Manitoba government announced the launch of a new midwifery program in the Interlake-Eastern Regional Health Authority. The program will be based in Selkirk, a city of approximately 10,000 people located about 25 kilometers north of Winnipeg.
The new midwifery program will begin with 2 full-time midwives who will provide a range of services, including prenatal visits, labor and birth support, newborn care, postpartum follow-up, and reproductive sexual health care. The midwives will operate out of a dedicated midwifery office in Selkirk.
Health Minister Uzoma Asagwara called the announcement "huge," stating that families in the region have been asking for midwifery services for a long time. Asagwara emphasized that midwives play a crucial role in guiding families through pregnancy, birth, and postpartum care with expertise, empathy, and cultural humility.
The Midwives Association of Manitoba's president, Sarah Harpe, described the launch as a "momentous" event, as the Interlake-Eastern region has been without midwifery services for over two decades. The new program aims to provide expectant parents in the region with the personalized, expert care they need.
