Kolkata Surgeons Push MICS Boundaries with Complex Grafting
10 Oct
Summary
- Four-graft MICS CABG performed, a first for Eastern India.
- Complex revascularization achieved through single small incision.
- Procedure challenges previous limits of minimally invasive surgery.
Cardiac surgeons in Kolkata have successfully performed a complex four-graft Minimally Invasive Coronary Artery Bypass Grafting (MICS CABG) on a 45-year-old patient, marking a potential first for Eastern India. This procedure revascularized all major coronary arteries through a single, small incision between the ribs, challenging established boundaries for minimally invasive techniques.
The surgical team, led by Dr. Md Rashid Zeya Ayubi, completed four intricate grafts, including connecting the left internal mammary artery to the LAD and using a vein graft for sequential connections to other critical arteries. This complex feat was achieved despite the inherent limitations of minimal access surgery.
This clinical milestone represents a significant advancement in cardiac care, showcasing how MICS CABG has evolved. Hospital officials noted that while they perform numerous MICS surgeries monthly, this particular four-graft procedure pushing the limits of coronary territory access is exceptional, even globally.
