A baby boy born at just 23 weeks has been discharged after a remarkable 104-day stay in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU). Weighing a mere 670 grams at birth on October 1, 2025, the infant, who was the size of a papaya, overcame numerous life-threatening challenges.
Doctors at Surya Mother & Child Super Speciality Hospital in Pune managed the infant's fragile condition, which included breathing support due to underdeveloped lungs. He battled a fungal bloodstream infection, chronic lung disease, neonatal jaundice, anemia of prematurity, early-stage necrotising enterocolitis, a CMV infection, and retinopathy of prematurity.
Specialized wound care was necessary due to the baby's fragile skin. The medical team used humidified incubators to mimic the womb environment. India faces a high rate of preterm births annually, highlighting the need for equipped facilities.
By late February, the baby was showing significant progress, gaining weight, and demonstrating normal feeding and sucking reflexes. The family received CPR training and essential equipment for home care. On April 1, 2026, the baby was cleared for discharge, a testament to the intensive medical intervention and care.
