Methanol Alert: 11 New Countries Added to UK Travel Warning

The UK Foreign Office has issued updated travel guidance, adding 11 nations to its warning list concerning methanol poisoning from alcoholic beverages. This proactive measure addresses a noted global increase in reported incidents, prompting concern for travelers' safety. The expanded list now includes destinations like Bangladesh, India, Iran, and Rwanda, among others.

Travelers are strongly advised to exercise extreme caution regarding alcoholic drinks, particularly spirits. The guidance emphasizes avoiding homemade liquors and unsolicited free shots, which pose a significant risk. Methanol, an industrial alcohol, is highly toxic and can lead to severe health consequences, including blindness or death, distinguishing it from safer ethanol found in standard beverages.
