Safety Concerns Force Northampton Hospital Patient Transfer
15 Sep
Summary
- Patients moved from under-fire hospital to NHS trust care.
- Safety concerns led to the removal of 287 inpatients in March.
- Allegations of abuse and neglect at the former site.
Mental health patients previously receiving care at a hospital now under scrutiny have been transferred to the Northamptonshire Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust (NHFT). This move occurred on Tuesday, placing the former St Andrew's Hospital site under NHFT's management.
In March of this year, 287 inpatients were relocated from the Northampton facility by NHS England due to significant safety concerns. These actions followed reports from patients, relatives, and whistleblowers alleging a culture of abuse. The BBC reported in February that 15 staff members had been arrested since October based on allegations of rape, ill-treatment, and neglect.
NHFT has leased several buildings from St Andrew's, including William Wake House and Fitzroy House, to facilitate the transfer. Additional care will be provided at Smyth House and Kemsley House. Approximately 160 patients and 1,700 staff are expected to be working at the site under the new trust. NHFT has stated its commitment to providing compassionate, quality care.
