2 Mar
Summary
- Menopause mental health stigma prevents women seeking support.
- Many women feel uncomfortable discussing menopause with male professionals.
- Lack of understanding links menopause to mental health issues.

A significant stigma surrounding the mental health impacts of menopause is deterring women from seeking help from doctors, employers, and loved ones. TV presenter Davina McCall is supporting a Royal College of Psychiatrists (RCPsych) initiative to enhance understanding of the menopause-mental health connection.
A poll revealed that 22% of UK adults would be uncomfortable discussing menopause with a male healthcare worker, compared to 9% with a female professional. Additionally, only 28% of women feel comfortable discussing it with a male boss, and 43% with a close male family member.
While 93% of women associate menopause with hot flushes, only 28% recognize a potential link to new mental illnesses. McCall emphasized that the impact on mental health can be devastating, affecting lives and relationships. RCPsych president Dr. Lade Smith stressed that menopause is a societal issue, as all women will experience it, and urged for improved policies and personalized support.
