Menopause Triggers Hair Loss in Over Half of Women
8 Feb
Summary
- More than 50% of menopausal women experience hair loss.
- Menopause often leads to itchy, flaky, and dry scalps.
- HRT, diet, and supplements can help manage symptoms.

More than half of women encounter hair loss and scalp problems during menopause, a period of significant hormonal change. Research reveals that hair shedding, along with itchy or flaky scalps, are common symptoms experienced by 53 percent of women surveyed. These findings align with studies showing that menopause can decrease moisture and oil on the skin and scalp.
Experts note that hormonal fluctuations throughout the menstrual cycle can affect scalp health by influencing oil production and inflammation. During menopause, the decline in estrogen leads to increased dryness, sensitivity, and irritation. Fortunately, solutions exist; hormone replacement therapy (HRT), a healthy diet, and vitamin supplements are recommended to help mitigate these changes.
