New research published in the Menopause Journal suggests that physical activity is a powerful tool for improving psychological well-being during menopause. A review of 12 trials involving over 1,000 women aged 40 to 65 found that exercise significantly reduced depression and enhanced mood and quality of life.
Aerobic exercises, including walking and dance, were shown to improve mood and overall life quality. Mind-body activities like yoga and tai chi specifically boosted a woman's psychological quality of life. Experts highlighted these as accessible, non-drug strategies for midlife mental health support.
The study also noted that group-based exercise formats can foster social connections, further contributing to improved quality of life. This research expands treatment options for women who cannot, or choose not to, use hormone therapy, offering an effective adjunct to medical care.
