Fraudsters Exploit UK Meningitis Scare for Cash
24 Mar
Summary
- Scammers pose as NHS to trick people into paying for MenB vaccines.
- Bogus texts and emails claim users were exposed to meningitis.
- NHS never requests payment or personal details for vaccinations.

Fraudsters are exploiting public fear surrounding a recent meningitis outbreak in Kent to perpetrate scams. The outbreak, linked to a Canterbury nightclub, led to a vaccination program for specific at-risk groups, including close contacts and university students.
In the wake of the health scare, scammers are sending convincing fake text messages, masquerading as the NHS. These messages claim individuals have been exposed to meningitis and need to book a MenB vaccine, sometimes requesting payment or personal details via links.
However, official guidance states the NHS will never request payment for a vaccine. While the NHS may use links for appointment scheduling, they will not ask for money or sensitive personal information beyond a date of birth. The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) has confirmed the risk to the general public remains low, as MenB requires close contact to spread.
To avoid being defrauded, individuals are advised to be wary of any messages demanding payment for vaccines. Direct verification through the official NHS website or app is recommended for any legitimate booking requirements. The vaccination program is currently targeted at specific groups identified as being at higher risk.
