- Three symptoms included headaches, stiff neck, and back pain.
- A UK-wide meningitis B outbreak has seen cases rise.

David Monteiro, aged 39, tragically died of meningitis on December 11, 2025, just four days after first experiencing symptoms. His sister, Rachel Monteiro, has shared his experience to raise awareness following a concerning outbreak of Meningitis B in Britain, which has seen cases rise to 20. David's initial symptoms included intermittent headaches, a stiff neck, and intense lower back pain, which he initially attributed to sleeping awkwardly.
His condition worsened rapidly, leading to a seizure and hospitalization. Despite receiving treatment with antibiotics and steroids at Heartlands Hospital, David was declared brain dead. His sister highlighted the aggressive speed of the illness, stating there was no chance to speak with him before he passed. The family remained by his side during his final moments.
Rachel urged others to seek immediate medical attention if they feel generally unwell and experience symptoms similar to her brother's, emphasizing the potentially life-threatening nature of meningitis. The UK Health Security Agency has described the current outbreak as "unprecedented." Common signs of meningitis, according to the NHS, include high temperature, sickness, headache, stiff neck, and a non-fading rash.
