Beyond the Rash: Early Meningitis Signs Save a Life
21 Mar
Summary
- Baby Millie had a 50% chance of survival after contracting meningitis.
- Early detection of meningitis symptoms prevented a worse outcome.
- Now 15, Millie has made a full recovery and inspires others.

A baby girl named Millie, just three months old, was airlifted for emergency treatment after contracting meningitis. Her mother, Becki Thornley, noticed unusual symptoms such as unusual sleepiness and stiffness, even before the characteristic rash appeared.
Millie's condition rapidly worsened, turning her skin grey and making her limp. Rushed to Blackpool Victoria Hospital and then airlifted to Manchester, doctors gave her only a 50% chance of survival and warned of potential limb loss or brain damage.
Fortunately, Millie made a full recovery and is now a healthy 15-year-old. Her mother is raising awareness of meningitis symptoms, especially those that appear before a rash, to help other parents recognize the signs early.
To support this cause, Millie and Becki are fundraising for Meningitis Now, participating in a 5km lantern walk in Manchester on October 4 at Wythenshawe Park. Becki also plans a 12-hour lash service marathon to raise additional funds.
