Meningitis Delay: Hospital Trust Under Fire
25 Mar
Summary
- Hospital missed opportunity to report suspected meningitis case.
- Delay in reporting to UKHSA occurred by 26 hours, not 24.
- Two students have died amid the meningitis outbreak in Kent.

East Kent Hospitals University Foundation Trust is under scrutiny for a delay in reporting a suspected meningitis case. A patient initially presented to The Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother Hospital on the evening of Wednesday, March 11, 2026. Although staff suspected meningitis by Thursday morning, the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) was not notified until Friday, March 13, after a diagnosis was confirmed.
This notification occurred 26 hours after suspicion arose, exceeding the legal 24-hour window for suspected meningitis cases. Health Secretary Wes Streeting acknowledged the seriousness of the delay but stated it "did not have a material impact" on containing the outbreak, as no evidence of onward transmission linked to the delay was found. The trust admitted there was an "opportunity prior to diagnosis being confirmed" to notify UKHSA.
The meningitis outbreak in Kent has tragically resulted in the deaths of two students, identified as 18-year-old Juliette Kenny and a University of Kent student. As of Tuesday, March 24, 2026, 20 laboratory cases were confirmed, with two more under investigation. Public health measures included vaccinating University of Kent students starting Wednesday, March 18, and administering thousands of antibiotic doses.
