23 Mar
Summary
- St John Rigby College confirms one suspected meningitis case.
- This case has no known link to the ongoing outbreak in Kent.
- Health agencies have traced contacts and offered precautionary antibiotics.

St John Rigby College in Wigan has confirmed a suspected case of meningococcal illness affecting one student. The college emphasized that this is an isolated incident and has no known connection to the significant meningitis outbreak currently affecting Kent. Health authorities have conducted contact tracing and provided precautionary antibiotics to all identified close contacts.
The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) has advised that the risk to other students at the college is very low. Normal college operations are expected to continue without disruption. This situation arises as concerns grow nationwide about potential meningitis clusters, particularly among students, following the outbreak in Kent which has tragically resulted in two confirmed deaths.
Experts believe the Kent outbreak may have originated from a "superspreader" event at a Canterbury nightclub. In response, approximately 8,000 vaccinations have been administered in the affected areas. Health officials are investigating whether the strain circulating in Kent is more contagious or severe than usual, with discussions also considering the potential role of shared vaping devices in its spread.
