22 Mar
Summary
- Expert urges reconsideration of meningitis B vaccination for adolescents.
- Kent outbreak linked to 34 cases, including two tragic fatalities.
- Vaccination drive is ongoing, with over 12,000 doses administered.

An infectious diseases expert has called for a review of the current meningitis B vaccination strategy for adolescents in light of an ongoing outbreak. Professor Paul Hunter believes the current situation in Kent, which has seen 34 confirmed and suspected cases, warrants urgent reconsideration of public health approaches.
The outbreak has tragically led to two fatalities, with concerns that returning students could spread the disease further. Health officials are focusing on contact tracing and antibiotic distribution to contain the spread, with indications that the outbreak may be peaking.
Over 12,000 doses of the meningitis B vaccine have been administered to individuals in Kent, primarily students. Antibiotics are also being used for immediate protection. The UK Health Security Agency has confirmed no supply issues with vaccines or antibiotics in the region.
