In Dorset, England, three cases of meningitis B have been confirmed between March 20 and April 15. All affected individuals have received treatment and are reported to be recovering. Two of the confirmed cases involved students from Budmouth Academy, while a third case was linked to Wey Valley Academy. No direct link has been established between these cases, suggesting potential wider transmission among young people in the area.
As a precautionary measure, close contacts of those affected have been offered antibiotics. Furthermore, all secondary school students in the Weymouth, Portland, and Chickerell areas of Dorset are being provided with MenB vaccinations and additional antibiotics. The UK Health Security Agency emphasizes that meningococcal disease does not spread easily, and these cases are not connected to a larger outbreak previously seen in Kent.
Meningitis B is the most common bacterial form of meningitis. While outbreaks are rare, the UKHSA advises awareness of symptoms such as fever, headache, and drowsiness, as the disease can progress rapidly. The current situation in Dorset is not on the same scale as the Kent outbreak.
