20 Mar
Summary
- Meghalaya certifies 86% schools as tobacco-free, the highest in India.
- State reports nearly 8,000 annual tobacco-related deaths.
- 47% of adults aged 15 and above consume tobacco.

Meghalaya has set a new national benchmark by certifying 86% of its schools as Tobacco Free Educational Institutions (ToFEI). This significant public health achievement addresses the critical issue of tobacco consumption, which contributes to nearly 8,000 annual deaths in the state. The Global Adult Tobacco Survey indicates that 47% of adults aged 15 and above use tobacco.
The state government initiated the ToFEI program three years ago under the National Health Mission. This initiative, a collaboration between the Health and Education departments, aims to foster addiction-free campuses by ensuring schools implement nine annual anti-tobacco activities. Schools must achieve at least 80 out of 100 marks on a scorecard to receive certification.
These activities include signage, awareness campaigns, and student-led rallies, creating an environment that discourages tobacco use among children. The success is attributed to strong government leadership, coordinated efforts from various officials, and the adoption of digital implementation methodologies. This effort underscores a commitment to safeguarding future generations from tobacco-related diseases.
