Doctors in West Bengal have recently reported two significant medical achievements utilizing advanced therapies. A seven-year-old boy diagnosed with HbE Beta thalassemia, who previously required monthly blood transfusions, has successfully undergone a haplo-cord transplant. This complex procedure involved using cord blood from a specially conceived sibling and stem cells from his father. Following the transplant conducted by Narayana Health, the child has recovered well and is now transfusion-free.
In another remarkable case, a 62-year-old male patient from Myanmar suffering from primary CNS lymphoma, an aggressive form of brain cancer, received advanced CAR T-cell therapy. After conventional chemotherapy proved insufficient, the patient underwent this innovative immunotherapy, targeting specific markers on his cancer cells. This treatment led to a successful recovery.
These successful outcomes were highlighted by Dr. Joydeep Chakrabartty of Narayana Health as landmark achievements, emphasizing the transformative impact of haplo-cord technology and CAR T-cell therapy on patients facing life-threatening illnesses. Dr. Prasanta Chowdhury of Cord Life Sciences India Pvt. Limited also commented on the successful management of cord blood banking concerns in these cases.
