This figure averages over $53,000 for each of the 100 confirmed cases identified.

The outbreak originated in Texas in January 2025, spreading into New Mexico by February and was declared over by September 2025. Public health response efforts accounted for approximately $3.2 million, with vaccination activities comprising about $2.1 million of the total cost. Direct medical costs were calculated at $290,000.

Meanwhile, the United States has already confirmed over 2,300 measles infections in 2026, marking the highest annual total in 35 years amid declining vaccination rates. Experts emphasize that the true cost of outbreaks, including cascading consequences and system disruptions, is often underestimated, underscoring the need to value preventative measures.
