Measles Outbreak Contained: 8 Cases Confirmed
22 May
Summary
- Eight cases of highly contagious measles confirmed recently.
- Measles is nearly 100% contagious through coughs and sneezes.
- Vaccination remains the most effective way to prevent measles.

The region's health ministry has confirmed eight cases of measles, a highly contagious illness. Four of these cases, including three adults and a baby, were identified by last Thursday. Measles is known for its near 100% contagion rate, spreading easily via coughs and sneezes.
Initial diagnosis timelines, once up to two weeks, have been reduced to just four days. Authorities have successfully contained the spread by meticulously tracking infection chains. Health minister Juan Jose Pedreño credited control measures by the Epidemiology Service for preventing the outbreak from escalating.
While an initial theory linked the outbreak to a baptism celebration in Alcantarilla, this has been dismissed. Europe recorded over 6,000 measles cases last year, with a third affecting children under five. The World Health Organization highlights children under five as particularly vulnerable, as measles can lead to serious complications like pneumonia, meningitis, blindness, and seizures. Vaccination is stressed as the most effective preventative measure.
