Measles Alert: Check Vax Status Before March Break Travel
3 Mar
Summary
- Mexico reports over 2,700 measles cases this year.
- Canada lost its measles elimination status in November.
- Vaccination is key to preventing measles spread and outbreaks.
As March Break approaches, public health experts are advising travelers to confirm their measles vaccination status due to rising cases globally. Mexico has recorded over 2,700 measles cases this year, while the United States has seen nearly 1,000 and Canada has reported 197. Canada’s measles elimination status was lost in November after decades, a concern for health officials.
This resurgence is attributed to several factors, including missed routine childhood vaccinations during the pandemic and increasing distrust in vaccines, partly fueled by misinformation. Experts highlight that measles is extremely contagious, spreading through airborne droplets, and high vaccination rates are essential for control.
Health professionals stress the importance of rebuilding public trust and emphasize that measles is a preventable illness. They encourage individuals, especially those planning to travel to areas with active outbreaks, to get vaccinated. Infants are particularly vulnerable as the vaccine is typically administered at 12 months.
Vaccination appointments can be made through local public health offices or pharmacies, even without a family doctor. While mild side effects like fever or redness can occur, the measles vaccine is considered very safe and provides lifelong protection after the second dose. Those concerned about vaccine safety are encouraged to research or speak with healthcare providers.
