Time Your Meals for a Sharper Brain
29 Jul
Summary
- Eating within an 8-9 hour window may preserve cognitive abilities.
- A small study showed improved cognitive tests in time-restricted eaters.
- Meal timing may offer additional benefits beyond weight loss.
A recent study indicates that the timing of meals could be crucial for maintaining brain health later in life. Preliminary research presented at NUTRITION 2026 suggests that restricting food intake to an eight to nine-hour window daily may help preserve cognitive functions like problem-solving.
The six-month clinical trial involved 47 overweight or obese women, aged 50 to 79. Participants followed a reduced-calorie diet, with one group consuming food within less than nine hours daily, averaging 8.2 hours. The other group ate over a typical 12-hour period.
Both groups achieved an average weight loss of 15 pounds. However, the time-restricted eating group demonstrated significant improvements in spatial planning and problem-solving tests. While memory and learning tests showed a positive trend, the differences were not statistically significant.
Researchers believe meal timing may offer benefits beyond weight reduction. Lead investigator Sue Shapses noted potential advantages in memory recall and reduced errors in attention and problem-solving. Further studies are planned to explore the mechanisms, such as impacts on circadian rhythms and metabolism.
