13 Jun
Summary
- Mazdutide trial shows over 20% weight reduction in Chinese adults.
- The drug significantly improved cardiometabolic risk factors.
- This marks a new non-surgical option for severe obesity patients.

A novel weight-loss drug developed in China, mazdutide, has achieved remarkable results in clinical trials, with a mean weight reduction exceeding 20% among adult participants. The once-weekly, 9mg dose also demonstrated significant improvements in key cardiometabolic risk factors, including waist circumference and blood pressure, while maintaining a favorable safety profile. These findings, recently published in the Journal of the American Medical Association, represent a significant advancement.
This breakthrough is particularly impactful as it offers a new non-surgical treatment option for Chinese adults suffering from moderate to severe obesity, addressing a long-standing unmet need. Experts note the drug's efficacy showed no signs of plateauing during the trial period.
Further studies, presented at the American Diabetes Association Scientific Sessions, explored mazdutide's effects on Chinese adults with type-2 diabetes and obesity, as well as adolescents. Results suggest a potential role in blocking the progression from adolescent obesity to adult metabolic syndrome. A Phase-3 trial for adolescent obesity is currently underway.
