- Cancer was discovered due to the blood clot; an 18-hour surgery followed.
- She now focuses on her community after overcoming significant health challenges.

Mount Vernon Mayor Shawyn Patterson-Howard has publicly shared her experience of overcoming two severe health challenges that threatened her life. In 2024, she was hospitalized with a saddle embolism, a dangerous blood clot, which necessitated drug treatment and surgery.
During this process, doctors discovered she had LMS sarcoma, an aggressive and rare form of cancer. The mayor noted that the blood clot was a direct result of the tumor, which was closely integrated with her vascular system. An extensive 18-hour surgery, performed exactly two years prior to her recent remarks, proved successful, and she was discharged cancer-free.
Patterson-Howard expressed immense gratitude to God, her medical team, and her supporters for her recovery. She explained that she waited two years to share her story, wanting to first navigate the process and then offer strength and hope to others facing difficult health or life issues. Her experiences have solidified her resolve in serving her community.
