New Program Cuts Months Off Mental Health Wait Times

A new program at The Midwives' Clinic of East York-Don Mills is revolutionizing maternal mental health care in Ontario. Launched last year through a partnership with Michael Garron Hospital, the Women's Reproductive Mental Health Program embeds a psychiatrist directly within the midwifery clinic. This model aims to streamline access, reducing the typical six-to-nine-month wait for mental health support to an average of just 27 days.

This integrated care approach has already supported over 150 mothers, offering timely assistance during vulnerable periods of pregnancy and postpartum. Urgent care appointments are also reserved weekly, helping to prevent reliance on emergency departments. Experts highlight that perinatal mood and anxiety disorders affect up to one in five women, yet many remain untreated.

The community-based model is designed to be less intimidating than traditional hospital-based care. By receiving both medical and psychiatric services at a single clinic, mothers like Sharika Sadaf report feeling significantly better supported.
