16 Jan
Summary
- Maryland recorded 25 cold-related deaths this winter season.
- Most deaths occurred outdoors in individuals aged 65 and older.
- Baltimore region accounts for half of the recorded fatalities.

As of January 16, 2026, Maryland has registered 25 deaths attributed to cold weather conditions this winter. The State Department of Health reported a significant increase, with six deaths occurring between January 4 and January 10. This surge coincided with average temperatures in the Baltimore region dipping to around 26 degrees Fahrenheit.
The majority of these tragic incidents, 12 in total, were concentrated in the Baltimore region, including seven in Baltimore City and five in Baltimore County. Data indicates that individuals aged 65 and older were most vulnerable, comprising the bulk of the fatalities. Furthermore, 13 deaths occurred outdoors, while 11 happened indoors, and one occurred in a vehicle.
Despite the rising death toll, there was a noted decrease in cold-related illnesses reported for the week of January 4. However, another wave of intensely cold weather is anticipated early next week, with potential wind chills in the Baltimore region dropping to near zero degrees, raising concerns for continued public health safety.
