Maryland Defies Federal Vaccine Cuts for Schools

The Frederick County Health Department is maintaining its full schedule of back-to-school vaccines, diverging from recent federal recommendations that reduced the number of universally advised immunizations. This decision aligns with Maryland's Vax Act of 2026, passed by Governor Wes Moore, which empowers the state to independently set public health and vaccine guidelines, separate from federal CDC changes. Maryland's requirements will continue to include vaccines like hepatitis B and meningococcal disease, which are no longer universally recommended by the federal government.

Elaine Kline, a nurse with the Frederick County Health Department, noted that while county requirements haven't changed, federal shifts have fueled misinformation and increased parental questions about vaccine safety. The health department is actively engaged in educating families through individual conversations and social media, providing evidence-based resources to address concerns. To support these efforts, free back-to-school vaccine clinics will be held from August 5 through September 30 for children without insurance or those facing access barriers.

Students in Frederick County Public Schools require documented vaccinations by August 19 or within 20 days thereafter to attend. The health department administers a significant number of pediatric vaccines annually, with fiscal year 2026 seeing 1,806 doses administered. They emphasize vaccination as a vital community effort for collective health and well-being. Parents must accompany children under 18, or provide written authorization for another adult, and only one guardian may attend appointments due to space limitations. All vaccinated children must remain for observation post-vaccination.
