1 Aug
Summary
- Maryland faces highest heat deaths in 15 years.
- Most victims, 61%, are over 65.
- Over 1,600 ER visits for heat illness occurred.

Maryland has recorded 38 heat-related deaths this year, marking the second-highest total in the past 15 years with two months remaining in the heat season. July alone saw 31 deaths, primarily during a significant heatwave with multiple days exceeding 100 degrees Fahrenheit. This figure surpasses last year's total of 36 and is second only to the 46 deaths in 2012.
Older adults and children are particularly susceptible to heat-related illnesses. Data indicates that 61% of the heat-related deaths this season occurred in individuals aged 65 and older. Emergency medical services have responded to 1,242 calls for heat issues, and emergency rooms or urgent care facilities have treated 1,627 cases of heat-related illness.
Experts emphasize proactive prevention, such as adequate hydration and appropriate clothing, before prolonged outdoor exposure. Recognizing symptoms like heavy sweating, nausea, dizziness, confusion, or fainting is crucial, as heat exhaustion can rapidly progress to dangerous heat stroke. Immediate medical attention is advised for severe symptoms, with healthcare providers prioritizing rapid body temperature reduction to prevent seizures, brain damage, or death.
