Martha's Rule is being piloted across NHS hospitals in the South West, aiming to amplify patient and family voices in recognizing clinical deterioration. Gloucestershire Hospitals NHS Trust was the first in the region to implement this initiative in its emergency departments.
Since January 2026, Martha's Rule has been appropriately used eight times for clinical matters. A spokesperson emphasized the trust's commitment to listening to concerns, with Martha's Rule serving as a vital tool. Somerset NHS Foundation Trust has also begun piloting the rule at Musgrove Park Hospital and Yeovil District Hospital.
Health Innovation West of England is supporting all acute NHS hospital trusts in the region with Martha's Rule implementation. Data shows that 30% of calls related to acute deterioration have led to crucial changes in treatment or improved levels of care. The remaining calls have facilitated discussions on medication, managing long-term conditions, and discharge planning.
