Son's Organ Gift Gives Life to Five Strangers

A young artist, Mark Thorley, tragically passed away at the age of 34 due to complications from epilepsy, including a series of cardiac arrests. His mother, Dawn Letham, shared the profound experience that followed his death at Tameside Hospital.

Despite the devastating brain damage Mark sustained, his mother bravely consented to organ donation, a decision that would ultimately save multiple lives. Mark was on the organ donor list, and his family's immediate permission allowed the process to move forward.

Following his passing, the organ donation team arranged for Mark's organs to be retrieved. His mother described a deeply moving guard of honour from hospital staff as they walked towards the operating theatre, a moment of profound respect.

Days later, Dawn received an extraordinary letter detailing how Mark's altruism had directly resulted in five life-saving transplants. Recipients included individuals in their twenties, thirties, and fifties who had been on waiting lists for kidneys, liver, heart, and lungs, some for several years.

This incredible legacy of giving life has provided immense comfort to Dawn Letham. She noted that Mark's actions have inspired some of his friends and colleagues to discuss organ donation with their own families, ensuring his spirit of generosity continues.
