Tiredness Hinted at Aggressive Cancer: Dan's Story
14 Sep
Summary
- Young man mistook aggressive cancer symptoms for flu and tiredness.
- Diagnosis of acute myeloid leukaemia came as a shock.
- He received a life-saving stem cell transplant from his brother.

A persistent feeling of tiredness and high temperatures led Dan Wright, a 33-year-old mechanical engineer, to seek medical attention, only to be diagnosed with acute myeloid leukaemia (AML). Wright had initially believed his symptoms were indicative of the flu.
The diagnosis of AML, a fast-progressing blood cancer, was confirmed after he was transferred to another hospital for further tests, including a bone marrow biopsy. Wright's treatment plan included chemotherapy, radiotherapy, and a stem cell transplant.
Fortunately, Wright's brother was a perfect match for the stem cell transplant, which he received on February 4, 2026. Following months of recovery in hospital and isolation, he is now rebuilding his strength.
Wright advises others to "listen to your body," emphasizing the importance of being aware of one's health. His experience highlights the 'SPOT leukaemia' campaign by Leukaemia Care during Blood Cancer Awareness Month, encouraging early recognition of symptoms.
