Manitoba's new drug site faces fresh opposition

Manitoba's efforts to establish its first supervised drug consumption site are once again met with community apprehension, this time regarding a proposed location at 366 Henry Ave. Minister Bernadette Smith emphasized the critical need for such a facility, citing 570 deaths last year, with many occurring in the vicinity of the proposed site. This location is approximately 700 metres from Dufferin School and a neighbouring daycare, meeting the province's new requirement of being at least 250 metres from educational facilities.

Previous attempts to open a consumption site faced significant hurdles. Plans for a location on Disraeli Freeway were halted in September 2025 following substantial community objections, primarily due to its proximity to a school. The province has since implemented stricter guidelines, ensuring new proposals adhere to safe distance requirements from schools and child-care centres. Community consultations are planned to address concerns and inform residents about the site's intended support services.

The proposed facility aims to offer more than just drug consumption, providing access to primary health care, mental health support, and housing resources. Minister Smith expressed a commitment to a harm-reduction approach, focusing on connecting individuals with services and pathways to recovery. Upcoming information sessions will engage the community, with plans to involve local partners in ensuring the site's effective operation and outreach.
