Health Sciences Centre in Winnipeg has unveiled a state-of-the-art gamma knife, enabling incisionless radiosurgery for brain disorders. This groundbreaking technology, a $3.2-million Elekta Esprit model, has treated 230 patients since its acquisition over a year ago, offering a significantly smoother patient experience.
The new gamma knife represents a major upgrade, enhancing the precision and efficiency of treatments. It can now address larger lesions and tumors, a limitation of previous systems. Gamma knife surgery has seen substantial growth, now making up a quarter of all brain surgeries performed in Manitoba, with approximately 5,000 patients treated over two decades.
This advancement significantly expands minimally invasive neurosurgical options in Manitoba. The integrated CT imaging and improved head-securing mask system enhance patient comfort and streamline procedures. Health Minister Uzoma Asagwara highlighted the system's role in supporting better hospital resource utilization and ensuring equitable access to advanced care for all Manitobans.
