11 Aug
Summary
- Manitoba resident diagnosed with West Nile virus in August 2026.
- Provincial government website shows zero human West Nile cases.
- Man believes he contracted the virus while hiking in Hecla-Grindstone Park.
A Manitoba resident, Todd Holmes, has reported testing positive for West Nile virus in August 2026. He expressed dismay that the provincial government's official website continues to list zero human cases for the year, despite his diagnosis. Holmes suspects he contracted the virus from a mosquito bite on August 3rd while hiking in Hecla-Grindstone Provincial Park, an area known for high mosquito populations.
Symptoms began shortly after his hike, including extreme chills, fatigue, headaches, and body soreness. His condition was further confirmed when blood he donated on August 5th tested positive for West Nile virus. Despite the province previously ordering mandatory fogging in late July 2026 due to high mosquito counts, Holmes feels the lack of public notification about his case is a significant oversight.
Holmes shared his diagnosis on a community Facebook page to inform others and prevent them from experiencing similar distress. He emphasizes the importance of using insect repellent and wearing appropriate clothing when spending time outdoors, especially in areas with abundant mosquitoes. He hopes the worst of his symptoms have passed but is proceeding with caution.
