Manitoba Adds 100+ Hospital Follow-Up Spaces
7 Oct
Summary
- Over 100 new spaces for post-hospital discharge care are opening.
- Approximately 600 patients await community support after hospital care.
- New spaces target patients with complex needs and homelessness.

The Manitoba government announced the creation of over 100 new spaces to support patients transitioning from hospital care. This initiative addresses the ongoing challenge of hospital overcrowding, where approximately 600 patients currently occupy beds despite no longer needing acute medical attention. These individuals are awaiting placement in long-term treatment or community support programs.
The new spaces are specifically designed to provide appropriate care for those who are ready to leave the hospital but require specialized assistance. This includes individuals facing homelessness, those leaving mental health facilities, and people with complex cognitive, psychological, or behavioural needs.
A dedicated mobile support team will also be developed to assist 25 patients in Winnipeg for up to a year. This multi-faceted approach aims to improve patient flow and ensure individuals receive the most suitable care outside of traditional hospital settings.
