Manitoba Measles Surge: February Sees Record Cases
21 Feb
Summary
- February has set a record for measles cases since the outbreak began.
- Eighty-five percent of cases involved unvaccinated individuals.
- Measles vaccination eligibility has been expanded for young children.
Manitoba has experienced its most significant measles surge in February since the current outbreak commenced over a year ago. By February 14, the province had confirmed 82 cases and identified eight probable cases within the month. This February's numbers surpass previous monthly highs, indicating an escalating public health concern.
Data reveals a strong correlation between vaccination status and infection, with 85 percent of confirmed cases involving unvaccinated individuals. Vaccination status was unknown for an additional five percent. Since February 2025, a total of 27 individuals have been hospitalized due to measles, with 26 of them being unvaccinated or having an unknown vaccination status.
To combat the spread, Manitoba has extended measles vaccination eligibility. Children aged six months to one year can now receive the vaccine in the Southern Health, Interlake Eastern, and Prairie Mountain health regions. Public health officials emphasize that vaccination remains the sole effective protection against measles, a highly contagious airborne illness.
