The Karnataka state government has launched the Shishu Sanjeevini scheme, prioritizing child health and aiming to decrease infant mortality rates. This initiative is part of a broader effort over the past three years to enhance public healthcare services across the state.
A newly established Shishu Sanjeevini Unit, encompassing a Midwifery-led Care Unit and a Human Milk Bank, has been inaugurated at the Mandya district hospital. This facility is a collaborative effort between the district administration, Zilla Panchayat, Mandya Institute of Medical Sciences, and the Department of Health and Family Welfare.
Minister N. Cheluvarayaswamy highlighted that the scheme will provide crucial support to premature infants and children suffering from malnutrition. He stressed the importance of educating mothers about the benefits of breastfeeding for infant health. The initiative is recognized as a significant advancement in neonatal care for the Mandya district.
Efforts are underway to continuously improve healthcare delivery, with expert review meetings held for every maternal and infant death to identify and address gaps. Breast milk is emphasized as vital for infants, and the Shishu Sanjeevini scheme is designed to prevent such preventable deaths.
