Cancer Research UK's Biomarker Centre in Manchester has received a substantial £6m investment, elevating its annual funding to £17m. This significant financial injection aims to facilitate a more detailed study of cancer, advancing research in crucial fields such as immunology, data science, and artificial intelligence.
The increased investment is expected to attract approximately 100 additional world-leading researchers and staff to Manchester. The institute's strategic location within the University of Manchester's Paterson building, adjacent to The Christie hospital, allows for rapid transfer of patient cells and samples, expediting research processes.
This funding will also support the development of future clinician scientists through two new positions, created in partnership with The Christie. The initiative underscores a commitment to integrating cutting-edge research with patient care at every stage.
Institute director, Prof Samra Turajlić, highlighted that the additional funding will make a "huge difference" and help attract top talent. She emphasized that patients will remain central to the institute's mission, positioning it as a vital "engine room for discovery."
