Sean Holland, 27, from Epping, Essex, has recounted his near-fatal battle with severe alcoholism. By the age of 21, his drinking escalated dramatically, leading to daily expenses of £55 on vodka and wine. Initially, he consumed beer to manage anxiety, but by 25, he was drinking up to three litres of vodka daily from 5 am to 11 am to prevent withdrawal symptoms.
His addiction led to multiple prison sentences between August 2023 and October 2024 for drink-related offenses. In March 2025, following a suicide attempt, Sean woke up in a hotel room surrounded by empty bottles and resolved to quit. This decision, however, triggered a seizure, landing him in the hospital.
Doctors diagnosed Sean with liver hepatitis, psoriasis of the liver, kidney damage, an inflamed spleen, and pancreatitis. His condition was so severe that his organs began to shut down, his urine turned black, and his skin turned yellow for three months, leading people to compare him to characters from The Simpsons.
After two months in rehab, Sean has been sober for 11 months. He now dedicates his time to helping others struggling with alcohol addiction, emphasizing that recovery is achievable. He credits his sobriety with regaining his family, a stable income, and supportive friendships.
