Male Breast Cancer: Stage IV Diagnosis Alarming
15 Apr
Summary
- One in four male breast cancer patients diagnosed at stage IV.
- Study reveals a significant six-month delay in diagnosis.
- Awareness campaigns needed as male breast cancer is often ignored.

In Hyderabad, a recent six-year study revealed a worrying pattern: one in four male breast cancer patients are diagnosed at stage IV, the most advanced stage. This highlights a significant issue with late detection, largely attributed to 'diagnostic inertia,' where symptoms in men are frequently overlooked.
The study, conducted between 2019 and 2025 at ESIC Medical College and Hospital, analyzed 15 male patients. Astonishingly, nearly 87% presented with advanced cancer, with 60% at stage III and 26.7% at stage IV upon initial consultation. Doctors noted an average six-month delay from symptom onset to diagnosis.
Common symptoms included lumps behind the nipple, nipple retraction, or skin thickening. Notably, none of the patients had a family history or known risk factors. Experts urge men with such symptoms to seek early evaluation and undergo genetic testing if diagnosed.
Despite free treatment at ESIC, factors like travel distance, lack of support, stigma, and low awareness impact care-seeking behavior. Doctors stress the urgent need for male-specific awareness campaigns, as male breast cancer is often excluded from public health messaging. Telangana's move to make cancer a notifiable disease is expected to improve data collection.
