Malaria Vaccine Price Slashed by 40%
24 Oct
Summary
- Malaria vaccine price to drop to €5.50 per dose.
- Lower price takes effect by early 2027.
- Deal expected to save $50 million for child immunisation.

Bharat Biotech announced a substantial reduction in the price of its malaria vaccine, Mosqivac, by approximately 40%. This price cut, achieved through an agreement with UNICEF and supported by Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance, will lower the cost to €5.50 per dose.
The new, more affordable pricing is slated to commence by early 2027. This strategic move by Bharat Biotech signals a commitment to establishing a sustainable and competitive market for malaria vaccines. It aims to ensure equitable access for vulnerable populations.
Financially backed by the International Finance Facility for Immunisation (IFFIm), this agreement is anticipated to generate savings of around $50 million for child immunisation programs. The savings are projected over the period from 2027 to 2029 and are expected to extend the full four-dose course to an additional million children.
Mosqivac, based on the RTS,S/AS01 vaccine developed by GSK, PATH, and partners, was the first malaria vaccine endorsed by the WHO in 2021. Significant investments of $200 million have been made by GSK and Bharat Biotech in advanced manufacturing facilities and product development to enhance supply and reduce costs.
Demand for malaria vaccines has surpassed initial projections since their rollout began in 2024, with over 74 million doses already procured and delivered by UNICEF. The Gavi-funded program is now integral to routine immunisation in 25 African countries most affected by malaria.
A complete four-dose course of RTS,S/AS01 has demonstrated a remarkable efficacy, reducing malaria cases by approximately 75% when administered seasonally in regions with high transmission rates.
