In response to escalating concerns about digital addiction among minors, the Maharashtra government has announced the formation of an expert task force. This initiative, revealed by State IT Minister Ashish Shelar, aims to comprehensively study the issue and propose effective solutions. The task force will include members from the state legislature, alongside educationists, psychiatrists, child counsellors, technology experts, and doctors.
The decision follows legislative discussions highlighting a significant increase in gaming addiction across both urban and rural areas of Maharashtra. Data suggests that approximately three out of ten child-related cases involve gaming addiction, with school assessments revealing around 40% of children suffer from moderate to severe gaming addiction.
This expert panel will delve into various aspects, including child protection, the psychological impact on mental health, responsible digital platform usage, and effects on education and development. They will also review existing national and international digital safety frameworks for children. The government is considering regulatory measures such as mandatory age verification for gaming platforms and 'time-out' features for minors.
Furthermore, the task force will assess broader implications, including economic factors and potential policy changes. The government is exploring the integration of 'Digital Hygiene' into the school curriculum and the establishment of 'Cyber Wellness Centres'. Any recommendations for legal amendments will be formally communicated to the Central government, which is also actively examining the issue.
